Supporting Individuals Affected by Domestic Violence: Three Helpful Strategies

People often wish to assist individuals in domestic violence situations, but it can be challenging to know how to offer help. At King's Daughters, we recognize the urge to support those facing domestic violence. Here are some valuable ways to provide assistance:

  • Stay Connected: Maintain regular contact and offer encouragement while showing concern for their safety and well-being. Avoid speaking negatively about their abuser, as they still care for them. Assist in planning and processing emotions, understanding that the journey may be long and unpredictable. Be patient if they seem inconsistent in their actions and words, and remain engaged without getting discouraged.

  • Listen Without Judgement: Listen without passing judgment, giving advice, or proposing solutions. Ask clarifying questions and focus on listening to their thoughts and fears. By being a good listener, they are more likely to continue confiding in you.

  • Provide Resources: Offer a list of local resources when they are ready. Be willing to accompany them if extra support is needed. Useful resources to consider are shelters, local law enforcement, social services, counselors, lawyers, and support groups. Share brochures or pamphlets about domestic violence if available.

If you are in the Charlotte area and seeking assistance, reach out to our office at 704-263-4204 or contact the Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233.
